The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Control Room Operators in the Accelerator Division.


Description of main responsibilities


• Perform scheduled shift work in ESS main control room.
• Ensure that the logbook for the shift is kept.
• Work together with and as instructed by the shift leader of the control room.
• During Machine Development and Commissioning shifts, work together with the study leader or systems testing leader, to ensure that the studies/tests can take place.
• Issue keys to the PSS controlled areas and monitor the placement of the keys.
• Work with technical systems groups and contribute to the development of the operations instructions, procedures and training.
• Ensure updating RAMI databases and preventive maintenance of components of the Accelerator.

Requirements 


• Technical degree (bachelor or equivalent) in physics, engineering or computer sciences.
• Basic knowledge of particle accelerator and support infrastructure systems.
• Experience working as an operator at a similar control room is a benefit.
• Good written and oral communication skills in English.
• Organised, with high sense of responsibility and good judgement.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.

The Integrated Control System Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applicants for an Engineer position for safety critical control systems in the Protection Systems Group.

Description of Directorate/Division

As an Engineer for safety critical control systems you will be part of ESS's Machine Directorate, and you will join the Integrated Control System Division, responsible for the design, construction, integration, commissioning, and operation of control systems for the ESS facility covering the accelerator, target station, neutron scattering instruments and conventional facilities.

The Integrated Control System monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to standardized PLCs controlling building automation.

Description of the Group

The Protection Systems Group is responsible for the delivery of facility-wide machine protection and personnel safety systems (PSS). These systems are critical for the successful and safe operation of the facility and are highly integrated into the design of the whole facility. As such, the work of the group involves plenty of interaction with stakeholders throughout the whole ESS project, both in Lund and internationally.

 Qualifications


• Higher education in electrical engineering / automation / computer science / computer engineering or similar.
• Experience in PLC software development.
• Experience with safety PLCs software development and knowledge of safety PLC software packages for assessing the conformity of a software-design with applicable safety standards and principles would be an advantage.
• Experience in developing technical documentation for safety systems and related procedures.
• Experience in designing, integrating, verifying and validating safety systems, equipment or networks.
• Experience in installation and commissioning of safety systems would be an advantage.
• Knowledge of relevant IEC standards - familiarity with the IEC61511 or ISA 84 safety lifecycle would be an advantage.
• Excellent oral and written English skills.

The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden invites applications for Entry Level Project Engineer position, in the Target Division.

 

Description of main responsibilities

As a project engineer for the Neutron Beam Extraction Systems, your main responsibilities are:


• Being responsible for engineering deliverables as agreed with the work package manager for the Neutron Beam Extraction System
• Being responsible for archiving received engineering documentation in collaboration with project work-unit leaders
• Act as a project go-to person for the Work Package team and external contributors for engineering documentation in the ESS database
• Participate in writing processes and procedures for testing and installation of systems 
• Participate in evaluating system and interface requirements for the Neutron Beam Extraction System 
• Participate in fabrication testing at fabrication locations
• Develop test specifications and procedures for system tests and commissioning
• Support and participate in the work of ESS’ team of researchers by collecting and providing data for related studies

Technical competencies

• Graduated Master in mechanical, electrical, nuclear engineering, physics, or similar engineering
• Knowledge within project management
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages can be an advantage
• Engineering work-experience is not required
